The strengths of traditional culture and the threat of change are at the heart of this enormous hit musical. Set in a Jewish village community, it tells in a mixture of comedy and song of the many challenges that test a family’s faith and emotions in turbulent turn-of-the-century Russia. The intense story is matched by outstanding, memorable songs with catchy tunes and rhythms and a cast of colourful characters.

THE GOOD THE BAD & THE PANTO
December 2009

Another first-time performance for Encore of a rootin’ tootin’ western-themed pantomime, written by one of our very talented members, Paul Barron. The Good The Bad and The Panto was a real treat and offered everything you would expect in pantoland - heroes, heroines, villains and a touch of romance, who together with our cast provided a blend of song, dance and laughter that ensured everyone started the festive season on a high note!
SPEND SPEND SPEND
June 2009

A Castleford premiere of this fabulous award-winning musical, based on local woman, Viv Nicholson’s original 1977 biography. Blending several musical styles, the excellently crafted and very humorous lyrics bombarded the audience with a dazzling mixture of exuberance, despair, triumph and tragedy.
When the Castleford couple, Viv and Keith, won the football pools in 1961, Viv told the press she would “spend, spend, spend”. Her rags to riches and back to rags story took her through five husbands, fast cars, bankruptcy and booze.
“This is a remarkable British musical comedy when it is played with such authenticity of accents and style. Producer, Paul Barron, knew his history of the local culture and his team knew it too. There was vivacity and neighbourliness in this performance …”
Brian Lewis, Pontefract
HAPPILY EVER AFTER
A Christmas Pantomime
November 2008

Happily Ever After was yet another successful pantomime written by one
of our talented members, Paul Barron.
Happily Ever After told the story of the toys who were eagerly awaiting
to be selected by Santa and given to a child as a special Christmas gift.
However, as you would expect in Pantoland, there were a variety of heroes,
heroines and villains who joined the toys in their quest and made the
journey a memorable one. Our cast provided a blend of song, dance and
laughter to ensure the festive season started on a high note and left
everyone feeling Happily Ever After.
OKLAHOMA
June 2008

Oklahoma was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first collaboration and
was a milestone in musical theatre in its fusion of story, song and dance.
Set in Oklahoma territory in 1906, it tells the story of cowboy Curly
McLain and his romance with farm girl Laurey Williams. Their love is challenged
by Laurey’s threatening farmhand, Jud Fry, and much of the story
follows the tension generated by this conflict, but as you would expect,
there is of course a happy ending.
This musical classic boasts one of the greatest scores ever written:
Oh What a Beautiful Mornin, The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, The Farmer
and the Cowman, People Will Say We’re in Love and of course the
title number, Oklahoma.
Encore’s enthusiastic cast staged its sparkling production of Oklahoma
in June 2008 at the Theatre Royal Wakefield.
